We'll be sowing some turmeric (haldi) in the next few weeks, and we are somewhat more qualified to growing them this season.
We had mixed results with our first experiment of growing turmeric at the farm last year.
Turmeric likes some shade. While it's okay with full sun, it does well when it gets a mix of good sun and shade. That's why it's best grown under or around not so dense trees.
A small batch we'd planted near the mulberry trees didn't get sufficient light and failed to grow as well as the turmeric that was in an open field that had a couple of small trees in around them.
This year, we've also learnt that it likes being planted around lemongrass and coriander, apart from being around fruit trees that let it have its sun and give it some shade too.
While the ideal time to plant turmeric in India is usually April, we wanted to plant just before the rains because our region can get really hot in April, May and June.
Once planted, it takes a good 8-9 months to grow well and be ready for harvest. We'll keep you posted about how it goes.
PS: You can grow turmeric in a deep pot at home too. Would you want to try that?
